A check records answers to your saved questions from the selected models. Each result belongs to a particular question, model and point in time. Together, those answers describe your brand’s visibility within that scope.
Set the scope
Choose questions relevant to your market, language and buyers, then select the models you want to monitor.
Collect the answers
Questions are sent separately to the selected models. The measurement request does not add instructions asking a model to favour your brand.
Analyse what appeared
ShareOfAsk identifies brand mentions, competitive context and cited sources. The recorded answer remains available for you to inspect.
Review the next step
Actions uses the findings and supporting evidence to suggest priorities. Review the rationale before deciding what to change.
02 / The questions
Start with the decisions your buyers face.
For a discovery benchmark, ask about the category, use case and requirements that shape a shortlist. Give the model room to name relevant options.
Which cloud migration providers should a UK financial services company evaluate?
Review suggested and manually written questions for relevance and leading language. Automatic checks do not guarantee that a question is neutral.
Questions that name your brand can help examine its perception. Keep them separate from discovery questions when interpreting visibility: naming a brand in the question changes the task you are measuring.
03 / The metrics
Read the percentage with its denominator.
AI Presence
How often does your brand appear in the measured answers?
Answers mentioning your brand ÷ measured answers in scope × 100
Failed requests are excluded. A brand counts once per answer, even if its name appears several times. An answer can mention several brands, so their AI Presence percentages do not need to add up to 100%.
Competitive Share of Voice
How much of the measured brand presence belongs to your brand?
Your brand’s counted mentions ÷ all counted brand mentions × 100
Each brand counts once per answer, including recognised name variants. The denominator includes discovered brands admitted to the analysis as well as tracked competitors. Repeating a name in the same answer does not add extra weight.
Question Coverage
Across how many measured questions did your brand appear at least once?
Questions with a brand mention ÷ measured questions in scope × 100
A question is covered if at least one included answer mentions your brand. Each question counts once across models and checks. The denominator includes questions with a successful answer in the selected scope; a question with no such answer is not counted.
Average First Position
The average recorded position of your brand in the extracted recommendation order, where a position is available. Lower values mean earlier placement. Answers without a recorded position do not contribute to the average.
Read this alongside Presence: an earlier position in a small number of answers can coexist with low overall visibility.
Check the scope before comparing tiles. On Overview, AI Presence, Competitive Share of Voice and Average First Position use the latest check; Question Coverage uses the available answers from the last three months. Other views follow their displayed period and filters.
04 / The evidence
Follow a finding back to its source.
A useful recommendation should give your team something to examine. Keep the observation, its context and the proposed action distinct.
Recorded answers
Read the model’s returned answer alongside its question. Brand detection, sentiment and other extracted labels are interpretations of that answer and can contain errors.
Cited sources
Sources include citations returned by providers and links found in answer text. Open the associated pages and check what they support. A citation does not, by itself, prove why a model mentioned or recommended a brand. Source availability varies by model and response.
Suggested actions
Actions combines findings, project context and follow-up research to suggest priorities. That research is kept separate from visibility measurements. Review the evidence and proposed steps with your team; the result is a recommendation for your judgement.
Repeated checks help you see whether a pattern persists. Keep the setup stable so changes in the measurement are easier to interpret.
Keep questions and models consistent. Review changes to wording, language or the selected models before attributing movement to your marketing work.
Match the scope. Compare the same period, filters and included brands. Changing the brand pool can change competitive share of voice.
Look at the counts. A percentage based on fewer successful answers deserves different weight. Inspect the underlying answers when a result moves sharply.
Keep a record of your changes. Note the work your team completed and compare later findings with it. Read AI visibility alongside search, website and commercial data.
An observed improvement is useful evidence to investigate. It does not establish that one content change caused it, or that revenue increased.
06 / Common questions
Understand the scope of the result.
Will I see the same answer in a consumer AI app?
Not necessarily. ShareOfAsk measures responses through the configured provider integrations. A consumer session can use different model versions, search settings, location, personalisation or conversation history. Treat a check as a recorded observation of its own setup.
What happens when a response fails?
A failed request is missing data, not evidence that your brand was absent. Response-based percentages use the measured answers available in their scope. A check without an AI answer is also different from an answer that omits your brand. Check completion, the underlying counts and any partial-result notice before comparing results.
Does a mention mean a recommendation?
No. A brand may appear in a comparison, a neutral description or a negative comment. Read the original answer and its context before treating a mention as an endorsement.
Does this represent every potential buyer?
The results represent your configured question set and selected models. They are not weighted by real buyer traffic or question search volume. Answers can vary between checks, and providers can change their models and search behaviour.
